Abstract

A patient was admitted to the emergency room with an open fracture of the tibia and fibula in the right lower limb and, during hospitalization, discovered that he had decompensated type 2 diabetes mellitus, with an average daily capillary blood glucose level of 450 mg/dl. The patient underwent emergency surgery and 2 months after this, he underwent a new surgical procedure due to the expansion of the wound and exposure of the synthesis material. Insert the triplanar external fixator to treat fractures and, to treat extensive injuries, using polypropylene prostheses. After 16 weeks, the external fixator was removed, as well as the prostheses, revealing complete healing and re-epithelialization of the wounds, concomitantly with the patient's glycemic control. Based on this case, the use of polypropylene prosthesis to treat serious injuries provided notable results and pressures.
