Abstract

The total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a standardized surgical procedure with high success rates in the treatment of severe knee osteoarthrosis. TKA pain can result in physical, cognitive and emotional discomfort. Pain management in these patients remains a challenge for orthopedical surgeons and anesthesiologists. Reduction of postoperative pain is an essential component for the overall satisfaction of the patient, the functional results and the length of hospital stay. The pain after TKA can be significantly controlled through multimodal analgesia mechanisms, such as preemptive medications, varied anesthesia protocols, peripheral nerve blocks and joint infiltration. We describe the case of a patient who underwent TKA with a new modality of pain control through an anesthetic solution by intra-articular immersion before cementation of the knee implants.
